I had a similar problem on my 86. However, mine actually seemed to be running rich (as evidenced by a foul plug). As suggested by someone here, it seems as is the diaphragm that makes the petcock automatic was ruptured and allowing fuel to be sucked directly into the combution chamber. I removed the vacuum line from the carb to the petcock, capped both fittings and run on prime. It's run 100% reliably since; just have remember to turn it "off" and watch my gas.
